Ready for the winter commute...

Lukaduke the Bike Commuter

This is me getting ready for my daily winter commute . This time of the year I kinda always feel like a buffalo... Some extra winter weight to keep me warm as well as thermal leggings, pearl izumi bike shorts, extra thick smart wool socks, a long sleeve layer of Marmot Thermal (Christmas present from Cassi !), on top of that I usually wear a hoodie but when temps fall below zero Ill add another layer between my thermal and hoodie.  Then its simply a nice pair of mittens, a neoprene baclava (pictured below) my ipod and my new Rasta Helmet and Im good to go.  It's a good rule of thumb that if your warm in your first five minutes of riding your probably overdressed.  My commute takes about 20-30 minutes on my winter route which cuts my "to work" commute from 12 miles to 7 miles... partly because the less time im exposed to the elements, which in Portland Me, have had me biking in blizzards as well as windchill temperatures dropping to -20 last winter. Therefore I take the shortest route possible, which has me traversing the infamous Veterans Bridge on the commute out to Scarborough following rte 1.  On the way home I usually opt to add a couple miles by riding through South Portland and traveling over the Casco Bay Bridge in order to get back onto the Portland peninsula.

My winter bike is an old Schwinn Woodlands mountain bike which I stripped down to the frame spraypainted yellow with OSHA yellow for extra visual bling and built up as a singlespeed commuter... for the other bike geeks out there the component are...

Dimension Track Crank 48t
Deda Stem
Old Riser Handlebars
Shimano Deore Brakes and Levers
Dimension Cage Pedals
Specialized Saddle
Surly Hubs
Alex Supra Rims
Nokian Mount n Ground Studded tires
